Reducing the Noise: How to Create a Stress-free Wedding

Image
Bigger isn’t always better. Some of the most beautiful ceremonies I have been a part of are small, intimate gatherings or elopements. When all of the “other stuff” is reduced, the couple has the opportunity to focus simply on themselves and the commitment they are making. Not only does the ceremony appear to be more relaxed, it also frequently appears more “authentic” to the couple – in that they are making decisions purely for their own enjoyment and not the needs/wants of extended family. At the end of the day, you are marrying your significant other – no one else – so your focus should be on them. If you are planning an intimate wedding or elopement, I would suggest keeping the vendor list short. Every wedding requires an officiant (which can be a family friend or relative). I would also recommend having a photographer to capture the day, especially given the limited number of people present, as many will likely want to see photos aft...

The one thing no one tells you about drone photography.

Image
Simply put: drones are much more complicated than most people realize. They make for some amazing photos and are able to capture angles that otherwise might not be seen in photos; however, flying a drone requires skill, precision, and practice. Drone (or aerial) photography is becoming the wave of the bridal future, as people are looking for new and inventive ways to capture their wedding. Aeriel photos of the ceremony site, bride and train, and bridal party and guests are becoming a wedding staple. However, there are many things to consider when choosing to have drone photography at your wedding: Drone Pilots should be licensed and insured. When hiring an individual to take drone photos, it is important to inquire about their drone license, as well as their liability insurance. Every individual who flies small drones are required to take specific classes and pass exams prior to obtaining thier license as a pilot. This is to ensure that they are capable of piloting a drone in all situa...

How To Modify Light Like a Pro

Image
In an ideal world, all weddings and events would be perfectly lit – all the time. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world. In fact, in the world of wedding photography, we live in a world of variance – a variant of light sources, light duration, and light strength. A wedding might begin in a dimly lit closet of a space, which they refer to as the “bridal suite,” move to a brightly lit ceremony site outside and transition to a dark reception, canvased in stars. As a photographer, you are expected to maintain consistency in the quality of the photos, despite the changes in light. How do you do this? The emphatic answer: light modifiers. LIght Modifiers – what are they? The simple answer: light modifiers are a tool utilized to modify (or shape) the light in photos. There are a variety of types, including grids, soft boxes, umbrellas, reflectors, and diffusers. Each of these tools modify and shape the light in a different way allowing the photogra...

The Ultimate Guide to Wedding Florals

Image
What to look for and where to look “Flowers…are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty out values all the utilities in the world (Ralph Waldo Emerson).” And what an assertion flowers make at a wedding! Flowers are the unsung hero at many wedding events and venues. They brighten a room and liven a photo. They bring vibrancy and richness to even the most mundane object. As a wedding photographer, the bridal bouquets and floral centerpieces often become the focal points in many photos. Need a beautiful backdrop for the wedding rings? Where is the bride’s bouquet? Need something for the bridesmaid to hold, to prevent awkward posed photos? Bring in the bridesmaid bouquets. Need a detailed shot of the groom’s tux? Where’s the boutonni ère  ? Yes, flowers out value much of the other wedding necessities and it is for this reason I have compiled some flower essentials. WHO?: When an individual thinks of wedding flowers, they normally think of the bridal bouqu...
