The "Raw" End of the Deal: Why I Don't Like Giving out Raw Images

Image
I’m going to be honest. As a photographer, I get a lot of requests. “Can you edit out my frown lines?” “My mother-in-law has some insecurities about her arms. Are there any edits or re-touching you can do to help?” “My brother got an awful zit the day before my wedding. Can you make sure they don’t appear in the photos?” And as a photographer, I do my best to honor these requests – when feasible. However, there is one request that I – like other photographers – dread getting. Can I get a copy of the raw images? Although I understand the curiosity that drives this question, there are several reasons that I don’t like giving out raw images and, for the sake of transparency, I’m going to highlight a few. Quality over Quanitity Sure, it might seem that having “more” photos to select from is better. However, I believe the age-old adage applies here: sometimes less is more. It might help to understand my...

Sharp Wedding

Tyler and Natalie met through an online dating service. As Tyler relays, “We swiped right on each other due to our ‘Office’ themed bios. Her bio stated ‘I’m looking for my Jim.’ Mine said, ‘I’m looking for my Pam.’ We stayed up all night after we met, talking about life. I met her at her dorm at USF, where we watched ‘The Office’ together for our first date. When I proposed, I took her to the parking garage of her old dorm, where we met. We slow danced to our ‘song’ before I dropped to one knee and proposed.” So happy for this ‘Jim and Pam.’ Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Sharp! Pro Vs. FAUX: The Importance of Hiring a Professional Photographer

Image
One of the most common pieces of advice I give a bride is to hire professionals. In fact, I have dedicated several blogs to the very topic (i.e. Bridal Remorse , Leave it the Pros ). However, I recognize that sometimes it can be difficult to discern the difference between the “Pro” and “Faux” photographers, especially in today’s market where a good portion of communication occurs through digital and social media. Frequently, brides are scammed into thinking that they have hired a “professional” when in reality they have hired a novice with a limited porfolio and expertise. Save yourself the disappointment and read on….. FAUX: Too-good-to-be true prices and promises Listen to what your grandma taught you: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Many novice photographers offer extremely low prices or discounts to attract brides who are looking for a “budget-friendly” option. They promise fast delivery and a host of digi...

4 Simple Ways to Improve Your Marketing and Social Media

Image
I’ve been taking pictures for a long time. If there is anything about the photography business that has taken longer to perfect, it would be marketing and social media. And admitedly, I have still not perfected my techniques. However, there are four simple things that I have learned within the past year, which has both increased my social media and online presence, as well as broadened my audience. Learn how to optimize your Pinterest profile – This one I will admit took time and practice. I have had a Pinterest business profile for approximately ten years. However, I have only recently learned how to utilize Pinterest to increase traffic to my website. For me, the magic formula includes creating consistent pins with SEO-friendly search terms and bright, vibrant images. Recently, I have begun creating ten to fifteen pins for every finished gallery, highlighting my favorite images and linking to the associated blog on my website. I spend time providing detailed descriptions ...
